During Isabella’s session, Isabella and her student worked effectively with her Year 8 student to review and improve her English assessment and identify areas for improvement. The lesson started by looking through the student’s assessment results and teacher feedback. Isabella discussed the comments with the student and helped her understand where marks had been lost and what was needed to achieve stronger results in future assessments.
As they worked through the assessment, Isabella encouraged the student to reflect on her original response and think about how they could be improved. Together, they revisited several questions and rewrote answers to make them more detailed and better aligned with the assessment criteria. Isabella asked guiding questions throughout the process, helping the student expand on her ideas and include more relevant evidence in her responses.
A large focus of the session was improving the student’s extended response writing. Isabella broke down the questions with the student and discussed what each question was asking before they began their response. She modelled ways to structure answers clearly and demonstrated how to develop ideas further rather than relying on brief explanations. The student was actively involved throughout the lesson and appeared comfortable asking questions whenever she was unsure.
One thing I noticed was Isabella’s ability to provide feedback in a supportive and encouraging way. Rather than simply correcting mistakes, she prompted the student to identify improvements herself, which helped build her confidence and independence. The student responded positively to this approach and became increasingly engaged as the session progressed.
The session was well-paced and focused on the student’s individual learning needs. By revisiting previous assessment tasks and practising improved responses, the student was able to apply feedback immediately and develop a stronger understanding of effective English writing techniques. Overall, the lesson provided valuable opportunities for reflection, skill development, and confidence building in preparation for future assessments.
Good job Isabella!
