You Got your trials back.. Now What?

Getting your trials back can be a strange feeling. You might be proud, surprised, disappointed or annoyed at how you lost marks on something you swear you studied. Whatever the result is, Trials are done, and the most important thing is now what you do with the feedback.

First, dont obsess over the number. Your trial mark is important, but it doesnt define how you will perform in the HSC. Instead of comparing your mark to everyone else, look at where you lost the marks. Was it because you didnt know the content? Did you run out of time? Did you misread a question? Or did you know what you wanted to say but struggled to explain it clearly? By identifying the reason you lost marks it gives you something specific to improve on.

Next, actually read over the teachers feedback. While it is tempting to look at the marks, complain about a few questionable deductions and the shove the papers into your school back not to be seen again, its very important to note that your trial paper is a personalised study guide. Highlight repeated mistakes and write down the areas you need to improve and revise before the HSC.

Then, redo the question you struggled with. Dont just read over the feedback and think, 'Yeah, that makes sense.' Try the question again without looking at the solution. For English, write the weaker paragraphs again or practice adapting your essay to the question. For Maths, HSIE, or Science, redo incorrect questions and find similar ones to test whether you actually understand the concept.

Finally make a realistic plan. You dont need to study 10 Hours a fay because one trial mark scared you. instead, focus on your weaker area or subject while continuing to practice your strength. Use your marks to maximise your results!!
