Year11 to Year12: It's not as scary as its made out to be

If you're heading into Year 12, you've probably already had about a hundred people tell you how important the next twelve months are. Teachers, parents, and older students all seem to have their own horror stories about the HSC.

And while Year 12 is important, the jump from Year 11 really doesn't need to be as dramatic as people make it out to be.

For starters, you're not suddenly learning how to be a student from scratch. You've already spent a year studying senior subjects, sitting assessments, and figuring out what works for you. Year 12 is really just a continuation of that, with just a bit more riding on the results.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is thinking they need to completely overhaul their lives the moment Year 12 starts. Suddenly they're making massive study timetables, canceling sport and convincing themselves they need to study for 6 hours every night.

For most students, that's neither necessary nor sustainable.

Instead, have a think about what worked during Year 11 and what didn't. Maybe you left assignments a bit late, didn't ask enough questions in class, or found yourself cramming before exams. You can gradually improve these things without turning your entire routine upside down.

The long summer break is also a great opportunity to get organized by setting aside a little time each week to revise difficult topics, tidy up your notes, or get ahead on some content. Just make sure you actually enjoy your last holidays as a school student too!

It's also worth remembering that Year 12 is a marathon, not a sprint. There's no point going absolutely flat out in Term 4 (term 1 of Year 12) if you're going to be completely cooked by the time Trials come around.

Keep playing sport, seeing your mates and doing things you enjoy. Having a life outside school won't ruin your ATAR.

The students who handle Year 12 best are the ones who find a sustainable routine they can stick to.

Take it seriously, absolutely. Just don't make the transition harder than it needs to be.
