Why tutoring helps and how to use it well

Tutoring has become almost a prerequisite for high school students chasing top grades. By the time I reached my senior years, I relied on tutors for nearly all of my subjects. But why, after spending six or more hours in a classroom every day, do so many of us feel the need for additional instruction? i beileve it comes down to the uniquely tailored learning experience that one-on-one tutoring provides.

Growing up with an Asian mother, my after-school routine always consisted of math workshets and practise writing prompts. Going to school was actually the fun part where I got to socialise with friends and learn collaboratively. I am incredibly grateful for those early years of learning at home, primarily because they accustomed me to asking endless questions and receiving instant feedback. In a traditional classroom, raising your hand to ask a "dumb" question isn't always practical or comfortable. Because of this, I relied heavily of self-directed learning throughout high school. Once I discovered tutoring, I finally found a space that mirrored that early, personalised feedback loop, allowing me to fully consolidate my knowledge.

However, the true value of tutoring lies in knowing how to utilise it effectively. Students must treat it as an active resource rather than a passive lecture. A tutoring session is a judgement-free zone perfectly designed to completely break down your thought processes and expose your knowledge gaps. It is the place to ask the seemingly "dumb" questions without fear of embarrassment.

Ultimately, tutoring shouldn't just be a repetition of classroom content; it should be a targeted tool for academic confidence. When students take ownership of that hour, using it to unapolagetically vocalise their confusion and test their understanding, tutoring shifts from an extracurricular expectation into a powerful catalyst for success.
