Why studying more doesn't always mean better marks

It can be really frustrating when you spend hours studying for a test and still dont get the mark you were hoping for. you might start thinking that you need to study even longer next time, but sometimes the amount of time youre studying isnt the actual problem. its how youre using that time.
sitting at your desk for three hours doesnt automatically mean youve done three hours of effective study. you might be checkig your phone, getting distracted or simply reading over the same notes again and again. it feels like studying, but that doesnt always mean youre actually learning the contnet.
instead, try making your study more active. do practice questions without looking at your notes, test yourself on what you remebr or explain a topic out loud as if you were teaching it to someone else. if you get something wrong, dont just check the answer and move on. work out where you went wrong so you dont make the same mistake again.
this is also where tutoring can really help. a tutor can pick up on areas you might think you understand but actually need more work on. they can also show you differnt ways to study and help you focus your time on the areas that will amke the biggest difference.
its also important to remeber that studying shouldnt take over youre entire day. sleep, breaks and time away from schoolwork matter too. studying when youre exhuasted usually isnt going to be as productive as you think.
so if your marks arent improtivng, dont immedtialy asssume you need to spend more hours at your desk. sometimes studying smarter is much more valuable than simply studying longer. a few focused hours can be much more worth your timme than wasting the entire day doing doing non-effective study.
