Why Students Should Practise Explaining Their Answers

Many students believe that getting the correct answer is the ultimate goal of learning. While accuracy is important, understanding how they arrived at that answer is often even more valuable. At First Education, we encourage students to explain their thinking because the ability to communicate their reasoning is one of the strongest indicators of genuine understanding.

When students explain an answer in their own words, they are forced to organise their thoughts and make sense of the steps they have taken. This process highlights whether they truly understand the concept or have simply memorised a method. A student may be able to solve a maths problem by following a familiar process, but explaining why each step works demonstrates a much deeper level of understanding. The same principle applies across every subject, from justifying an opinion in English to explaining scientific processes or analysing historical events.

Explaining answers also helps students identify gaps in their knowledge. It is common for a student to feel confident until they are asked to describe their thinking. If they struggle to explain a particular step or idea, they quickly discover where further revision is needed. Identifying these gaps early allows students to strengthen their understanding before they appear in an assessment.

Tutoring provides an ideal environment for developing this skill. Rather than simply confirming whether an answer is correct, tutors ask students to talk through their reasoning, justify their decisions and consider alternative approaches. These conversations encourage active thinking and help students become more confident in expressing their ideas.

Students can also practise this habit at home. Explaining a concept to a parent, sibling or even aloud to themselves can be just as effective as completing another worksheet. If they can teach the idea clearly, they are far more likely to understand it deeply and remember it later.

Learning is about much more than finding the right answer. By regularly practising how to explain their thinking, students strengthen their understanding, improve their communication skills and develop the confidence to tackle new and unfamiliar challenges with greater independence.
