Why Students Should Learn to Work Backwards From the Answer

Many students approach a question by starting at the beginning and moving step by step towards an answer. An alternative is to start with the result they need to reach and work backwards to identify what must happen along the way.
In mathematics, working backwards can make unfamiliar problems easier to organise. If a question says a number was multiplied by four and then increased by six to give thirty, students can reverse those operations: subtract six, then divide by four. This helps reveal not only the answer, but the relationship between each step.
The idea is useful beyond maths, too. When planning an essay, students can begin by considering what their final argument needs to demonstrate, then work backwards to identify the evidence and explanations that will support it. For a science investigation, they can consider what result would answer the inquiry question and decide which observations or measurements they would need.
Working backwards does not replace learning a method or understanding a concept. Some questions are best solved from the information given, and starting with the desired outcome will not always help. The skill is knowing when this alternative perspective might make the task clearer.
Students can practise by asking themselves a few questions before they begin: What am I trying to find? What would I need to know immediately before reaching that result? Can I reverse a step or trace the logic back to the information provided? These questions can help them see the structure of a task.
Tutoring can help students explore more than one way to approach a question. A tutor might guide a student to work backwards, compare that approach with a forward solution and discuss when each strategy is useful. Over time, students can build a wider toolkit instead of relying on one familiar method.
Sometimes, making progress means changing where you look from. Starting with the destination can help students see a clearer route to get there.
