Why Students Should Keep Asking “What Does This Actually Mean?”

It is easy for students to assume that understanding a topic means being able to remember the information they have been taught. They might know a definition, remember a formula or reproduce an example from their notes. However, there is an important question that can take learning much further: “What does this actually mean?”
Asking this question encourages students to move beyond memorisation and consider the ideas behind the information. In maths, knowing a formula is useful, but understanding what the formula represents and why it works makes it much easier to apply. In science, remembering a definition is only part of the process. Students also need to understand how concepts connect and what they mean in different situations.
This approach is valuable because it can reveal gaps in understanding. A student may be able to repeat something they have read without being able to explain it in their own words. Asking what the information actually means encourages them to stop, unpack the idea and make connections with what they already know.
It can also make learning more interesting. Instead of treating every topic as a list of facts to remember, students begin looking for relationships, causes and explanations. This naturally encourages curiosity and can make difficult concepts feel more relevant and meaningful.
Tutoring provides an excellent environment for developing this habit. A tutor can encourage students to question unfamiliar ideas, explain concepts in their own words and connect new knowledge to previous learning. Rather than simply providing answers, tutors can guide students towards discovering the reasoning for themselves.
Students can practise this independently too. Whenever they encounter a new definition, process or formula, they can pause and ask themselves what it means, why it matters and how they would explain it to someone else.
Good learning is not just about collecting information. It is about understanding what that information represents and how it fits together. By getting into the habit of asking “What does this actually mean?”, students can develop deeper understanding, stronger critical thinking skills and greater confidence when applying what they have learned.
