Why sleep matters for school success

With assignments, homework, exams, sport and busy social lives, sleep can often become neglected and the first thing students sacrifice. Staying up late to study might seem like a productive way to get more done, but getting enoug sleep is actually an important element of learning and performing well at school.

Sleep helps a student's brain learn and remember. Throughout the school day, students take in a huge amount of information. While we sleep, the brain processes and stores what we have learned, helping strengthen memories and improve recall of information. This means that an extra hour of sleep can sometimes be more beneficial than an extra hour of late night study. If you are preparing for an upcoming test, aim to get a good night's sleep rather than staying awake until the early hours of the morning to memorise everything.

Sleep also affects concentration and focus for students. When students are tired, it can be harder to pay attention in class, follow instructions and complete set tasks accurately. Even completing simple questions can feel more difficult when your brain is running on empty. Getting enough sleep helps students arrive at school feeling more alert and ready to participate in their learning.

Additionally, a student's mood matters. Lack of sleep cna make students feel more irritable, stressed, or overwhelmed. School can already be challengng, particularly during assessment periods, so looking after your sleep cna help you manage pressure and maintain a positive mindset.

So, how can students improve their sleep? Try establishing a consistent bedtime, avoid studying right up until you go to sleep, and give yourself time to wind down without your phone or computer or other screens. Most importantly, remember that sleep is not time wasted, it is part of your study routine.

At tutoring, we often focus on strategies to help students study more effectively, but good study habits extend beyond the books. Getting enough sleep can contribute to better learning and stronger academic performance.
