Why Feedback From a Tutor Matters Before HSC Trials

For NSW Year 12 students, HSC Trials are more than another assessment. They test how well you can apply the knowledge, skills and outcomes in the syllabus that you’ve spent 2 years learning under exam conditions. That is why feedback from a tutor can make a difference before Trials.

When I was in Year 12, I really valued my tutor’s feedback. My teachers worked hard, but they were responsible for classes of 30 students. It was difficult for them to spend time identifying every weakness in my work. My tutor, however, could focus solely on me and provide specific advice based on what I needed to improve.

For English, this could mean reviewing an essay against the relevant module requirements and explaining how to strengthen my thesis, textual evidence and analysis. Instead of simply saying that a paragraph needed “more detail”, my tutor could show me where my argument stopped answering the question or where I had not addressed a NESA directive verb such as “analyse”, “evaluate” or “compare”.

The same applied to Mathematics. A tutor could identify the exact syllabus area causing problems, whether it was calculus, financial mathematics, statistics or another topic. They could then explain the concept, correct my working and give me targeted HSC-style questions until I could complete them independently.

NESA marking guidelines award marks according to the knowledge and skills required by each question and the syllabus outcomes being assessed. Past HSC papers also include marking guidelines and marker feedback, making them valuable preparation resources. A tutor can use these materials to show you what markers are looking for and how to improve your responses.

Before your HSC Trials, personalised feedback turns vague weaknesses into clear goals. Rather than revising everything equally, you can focus your study time on the areas most likely to improve your marks.
