Why does the colour black abduct heat more than white

Black objects absorb more heat than white objects because they absorb more of the light energy that falls on them. Sunlight is made up of many wavelengths of visible light as well as infrared and ultraviolet radiation. When light strikes an object, three things can happen: it can be absorbed, reflected, or transmitted. The amount of each depends on the colour and surface of the material.

A black surface appears black because it absorbs almost all visible wavelengths of light and reflects very little. The absorbed light energy is converted into thermal energy (heat), causing the object to warm up more quickly. In contrast, a white surface reflects most of the incoming light and absorbs only a small amount. Since less energy is absorbed, less is converted into heat, so the object stays cooler.

This effect can easily be observed on a sunny day. A person wearing a black shirt will usually feel hotter than someone wearing a white shirt because the black fabric absorbs more solar energy. Similarly, black cars often become much hotter inside than white cars when parked in direct sunlight.

The ability of a surface to absorb and emit energy is also related to a property called absorptivity. Black surfaces generally have high absorptivity, while white surfaces have low absorptivity. Good absorbers of heat are also good emitters of heat, but during strong sunlight, the greater absorption of energy by black objects usually outweighs the heat they emit.

In summary, black absorbs more heat than white because it takes in most of the light energy that reaches it and converts that energy into heat. White reflects most of the light away, absorbing much less energy. This is why colour plays an important role in determining how warm an object becomes when exposed to sunlight.
