Why Confidence Matters

One of the most important things I have learnt through tutoring is that a student's confidence can have just as much of an impact on their performance as their actual knowledge. Students often come into sessions believing they are bad at a topic just because they have struggled with it or received a disappointing result. A lot of my students will see a question and immediately give up just because its a topic they believe they are not confident with and therefore, they think they wont be able to do it. In instances where a student approaches a question they think they cannot do, I simply remind them to slow down and read it over a few times to garner what it is asking. In most scenarios, my students are able to complete it and realise it was way easier than they thought.

I have found that improving a students confidence begins with creating an environment where mistakes are treated as part of learning instead of something to fear or be embarrassed by. I also try and make sure that when a student has just started a topic, I will plan questions that gradually get more difficult. Beginning with questions a student is comfortable with before progressing to more difficult problems allows them to build momentum and confidence. By using these strategies to build a students confidence, it translates into their marks and how they approach questions.

Ultimately, while immediate academic results are important, helping students become more confident and independent can have a much longer-lasting impact.
