One thing I have noticed whenever I start with a new student is that commonly, they are hesitant to ask for help. Whether it is they feel like they should already understand the content, worry that their question is "dumb" or compare themselves to others who seem to understand things immediately and then become too embarrassed to admit that they dont ! However, asking for help is an essential and necessary part of learning, I think it is THE most important part.
When a student asks a question, it gives them the opportunity to identify exactly what they dont understand instead of continuing with a gap in their knowledge. This is especially important in Maths where topics often build upon each other and connect. A small misunderstanding (or no understanding at all) can make questions feel overwhelming and way more difficult than they actually are. Tutoring provides students with an environment where they are comfortable to ask these questions. A smaller group or one-on-one session means that there is ample time to stop and revisit a concept again, explaining it in a different way that may make more sense to the student. I also try and create an environment where the student feels comfortable to ask questions at the start. I try to encourage them to communicate what exactly they need help with and I can always help fill in the gaps. Overall, I always try and emphasise that help does not mean a student is struggling or not capable. It may be a simple case that they have just been taught it in a way that does not resonate with the student's learning style. Learning is a process and being willing to ask questions can help students become more confident in the subject as a whole.
