A lot of people are asking whether tuttoring still matters now that students can get help from AI. This is a fair questtion, but I think the answer remains a definite yes, at least for now.
A student stuck on homework at 11pm used to have two options. Wait until class time or simply give up. Now they can ask Chatgpt or other generative AI to get something explained in steps. That's useful, and is 100 percent better than a student spending time stuck on a question.
However, explanation was never the whole problem. Most high school students who fall behind have already had the content explained to them plenty of times. They're behind because they are stressed or distracted, or they simply categorise themselve as not a "maths person". No chatbot is going to check in on a kid asking how they are going on their assignment. A good tutor will, every week, and it works.
So we see tutors slowly turning into something closer to coaches. AI can be a quick refresher on a question, however tutors are the ones that keep students on track, help with long term planning. Tutoring also contributes greatly in rebuilding students' confidence, something that AI cannot replace. That stuff needs a real person.
Great tutoring is more than knowing the content. Every student has something in their pocket that knows the content. What they don't have is someone who knows them, what they find hard, and what they were struggling with last week.
The part that is worrying is the copying. It's so easy for students to grab an answer and move on without learning anything. Most teenagers will take the shortcut if it's there, we all would have at that age. That's where a tutor makes the difference, making sure students are actually learning and not just getting through.
