Wait Time

Wait Time

One strategy that is often overlooked in tutoring is giving students enough time to think before expecting an answer. It can be tempting to step in with hints or explanations as soon as a student hesitates, but allowing a few extra moments of silence can have a significant impact on learning.

Students often need time to process information, especially when they are working through a new concept or solving a challenging problem. If a tutor answers the question too quickly, the student misses the opportunity to think independently and develop their own reasoning skills. Waiting patiently encourages students to organise their thoughts and arrive at an answer themselves.

This strategy also helps build confidence. When students realise they can solve a problem without immediate assistance, they begin to trust their own ability. Over time, they become more willing to attempt difficult questions and rely less on constant reassurance from their tutor.

Wait time is particularly valuable when asking open ended questions. Giving students the chance to explain their thinking often reveals much more than a simple correct or incorrect answer. It allows tutors to understand the student's reasoning, identify misconceptions, and tailor explanations to meet their needs.

Of course, wait time does not mean leaving students to struggle for long periods. The tutor's role is to recognise when a student needs additional support and provide prompts that guide their thinking without taking over the task. Finding this balance helps students remain challenged while still feeling supported.

By slowing down and allowing students time to think, tutors encourage independence, strengthen problem solving skills, and create a learning environment where students feel confident exploring ideas. Sometimes the most effective teaching strategy is simply giving students the time they need to discover the answer for themselves.
