Using Stars in Tutoring Sessions

The star system is a simple but highly effective way of encouraging positive behaviour and consistent effort during primary tutoring sessions. It gives students a clear goal to work towards and provides regular recognition for the positive choices they make throughout each lesson.

In our tutoring sessions, students can earn up to five stars for completing their behaviour and up to five stars for completing their homework. This encourages students to understand that success is not only measured by academic ability, but also by effort, preparation, and a positive attitude towards learning.

For younger students immediate positive reinforcement is extremely important. Receiving stars throughout the lesson helps keep them motivated and engaged, as they can see their progress in real time. It also provides opportunities to celebrate small achievements, whether that is staying focused, participating in activities, asking thoughtful questions, or arriving with their homework completed.

The star system also teaches responsibility and accountability. Students know that their actions have outcomes. Consistently earning stars allows them to accumulate enough points to receive a prize, giving them something exciting to work towards over a longer period. This encourages positive habits that extend beyond a single tutoring session.

Equally, the system helps reinforce expectations when these standards are not met. If a student is regularly unable to earn stars due to behaviour or incomplete homework, this may result in communication with parents. Keeping parents informed ensures everyone is working together to support the students progress and reinforces the importance of meeting expectations both during and between tutoring sessions.
