It may be bold to say, but 2026 is going to be a great year for movies. A large variety of genres, sequels and originals are releasing in the second half of this year, with many of them already suggested to be Oscar candidates.
The most recent release, just this week, is Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey', an adaptation of the highly debated historical writer Homer's 'Odyssey', starring A-list actors Matt Damon, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattison and Tom Holland. Whilst the movie initially received criticism after its announcement, partly due to the casting and clothing inaccuracies to the Ancient-Greece period, early showings have lead to a large number of positive reviews, sparking an even greater public interest in the movie.
Meanwhile, Marvel is releasing two predicted high-gross films, 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' at the end of this month and 'Avengers: Doomsday' in December. Marvel experienced what has been donned by fans as a 'flop' after 'Avengers: Endgame', unsuccessfully attempting to recover after the release of several cancelled shows such 'Moon Knight' after 1 season and 'Okoye'. With these two upcoming films, Marvel appears to be focusing on returning to the larger-scale storytelling and cinematic events that originally built its dedicated fanbase.
Following massive movie franchises, 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping', a prequel to the original movies, will release in November. The movie has generated significant anticipation, particularly among long-time fans, following the positive reception of Suzanne Collins’ novel of the same name.
Another major release expected in 2026 is 'Dune: Part Three', directed by Denis Villeneuve. Continuing the critically acclaimed science-fiction epic, the film will see Timothée Chalamet return as Paul Atreides. Following his previous award recognition for his performances, Chalamet will likely be hoping to secure another Oscar nomination, while the film itself is expected to be a strong contender during awards season. The film also marks another major project for Zendaya, making it her fourth major movie release of 2026.
