Tutor Observation - Olivia

Olivia demonstrated a positive and supportive teaching approach throughout the tutoring session, establishing a strong rapport with her Year 3 student. She began by revisiting the student's previous imaginative writing task, providing specific praise for improvements in ideas, vocabulary, and sentence structure. Olivia acknowledged the student's effort and progress, which increased the student's confidence and willingness to discuss their writing. Constructive feedback was delivered positively, encouraging the student to build on their strengths while refining areas that needed improvement.

The session then shifted to reviewing the student's recent school mathematics examination. Olivia carefully revisited questions the student had answered incorrectly, encouraging them to explain their thinking before working through each solution together. This approach helped identify misconceptions and reinforced the correct mathematical strategies. Olivia remained patient and encouraging throughout, ensuring the student understood each concept before moving on.

Building on the exam review, Olivia introduced a series of word problems. She explicitly taught the student to highlight important information, identify key words, and determine what the question was asking before attempting to solve it. Olivia modelled this strategy by completing the first problem alongside the student, verbalising her thinking throughout the process. This scaffolded approach gave the student a clear framework to follow.

The student then applied the strategy independently to the remaining questions, demonstrating increasing confidence and accuracy. Olivia continued to provide positive reinforcement and prompted the student with guiding questions when needed rather than giving answers directly, promoting independent problem-solving skills.

Overall, Olivia maintained a calm, engaging, and supportive learning environment. Her strong relationship with the student encouraged active participation, confidence, and persistence across both literacy and mathematics tasks. The session effectively balanced explicit instruction, constructive feedback, and opportunities for independent learning, supporting the student's ongoing academic development.
