Things I've Learned After Tutoring Students of Different Ages

Over my time at First Education, I've had the opportunity to tutor students across almost every year level, from Year 1 students learning how to read, through to Year 12 students preparing for their HSC. What I've learnt is that learning isn't simply about receiving a good mark. Those things are important but they don't always tell the whole story of a student's ability, growth or potential.
Younger students need strong foundations.
In primary school, tutoring is often about developing the skills that everything else will build on, reading, spelling, comprehension, problem solving, etc. If a student is struggling with one of these areas, simply moving forward will allow gaps to continue to grow. Taking the time to strengthen those foundations can make a huge difference later.
As students get older, application becomes key.
In high school, I often see students who know the content but struggle to apply it. They might understand but struggle to answer the question. Here tutoring becomes less about teaching content and more about teaching students how to think through a question and use what they already know.
However, what applies across every age is confidence.
One of the most rewarding parts of tutoring is watching a student grow as an individual. The same student who once said, "I can't do this" starts having a go. A classroom environment doesn't always allow every student to be seen. It can be easy for students to fly under the radar and stay quiet. Here is when tutoring is most beneficial, when a space is created where students can build their confidence.
Marks will always matter, but they aren't a complete reflection of what a student is capable of. Sometimes the most important progress happens before it appears on paper.
In a rapidly changing world, I believe on of the most valuable things we can provide to a student is the foundation to become confident, curious and independent learner. Someone who is willing to try and capable of figuring things out. Those are the skills that will continue to matter long after the marks are forgotten.
