The subject isn't the problem, the confidence is

Most students who say they "hate" a subject don't actually hate it. They hate feeling lost in it. There's a large difference, and it matter more than people think.

If you think about it, nobody is born hating something. What usually occurs is a student misses small concepts early in their learning, doesn't understand it, and thus everything else starts to become unsteady. By the time it's obvious something is wrong, the student isn't just behind on content - they've decided they're "bad" at the whole subject. That belief is much harder to undo than any actual gap in knowledge.

This is why tutoring that only focuses on homework and assignment help often don't achieve the necessary success of their students. It doesn't fix the cracks in the foundation, rather it just checks of a to do list each week.

Real progress looks different. It means slowing down enough to find where things actually went sideways, sometimes months earlier than anyone realised. It means normalising questions that feel "too basic" to ask in a classroom of people at school. Questions like, "what is the difference between a theme and a main idea?" or "how do I structure of analysis?". It also means giving a student enough small wins in a row to let them trust themselves again and look at assignments with confidence.

None of this happens overnight, and it is rarely dramatic. It's quiet, consistent progress that snowballs into visible successes further down the students academic journey. The goal of tutoring is to never make the student love the subject. It is to get them to a place where a hard subject feels manageable instead of hopeless. That shift changes more than a grade. It changes how students see themselves as a learner, which tends to matter long after high school ends.
