I have found that the last lesson of term can be a particularly good opportunity for sessions to be filled with a review of all that was achieved in the term, a time for reflection and a great opportunity to plan ahead and set goals for the term to come! This can apply to both primary and high school students in my opinion, although, it does look different for each.
For primary school students, I have found it particularly beneficial and useful to do a 'termly recap' in the final week of sessions. I typically list out all the content/topics we covered and allow the student, in three different colours, to identify the topic/s they found easy and memorable, a topic they found a little challenging and would like to go over again, and some topics they may have found particularly difficult over the term (E.G: circling the easy topics green, slightly challenging topics orange, and very difficult topics red). We then spend time on the topics which were a little and particularly challenging, allowing the student to recap on those harder topics, ensuring they receive some extra support and revision before they break for the holidays. As an extension to this, it's also helpful to then review these topics again throughout the break (if they have sessions) or in the first few weeks of term for extra recall and revision!
For high school students, I also find it beneficial to recall the topics/content from the term but to extend on this and plan goals for the upcoming term based on some constructive discussion and reflection. As high school students are able to articulate and identify their areas of strength and improvement easier, it is a great opportunity to have a chat about this and then create some achievable yet challenging goals for the next term, improving on areas from the last term. For example, a student may identify they need to improve their time management in exams and, as such, the tutor and the student can set out a clear and achievable plan for improving this area for next term.
Overall, the end of term is a great time for reflection, recall and planning for all students and tutoring is the perfect environment for this!
