Studying Smarter: Focus on the Weaker Subjects First

When exam periods start to arrive, many students tend to begin with the subjects they enjoy the most. It feels much easier, more rewarding and helps us tick off study tasks much quicker. However, one the best and smartest approach to prepare for exams is to focus on your weaker subjects first, and then finish with the subjects you enjoy and feel confident in.

For students, weaker subjects need the most time and attention. Concepts may take longer to understand, and you will likely need extra practice questions, revision and support. By studying these subjects first, you give yourself the greatest opportunity for improvement prior to the exam. Waiting until the last minute often leads to extreme stress and rushed learning, which makes it harder to remember information. For example, students will typically say "Yeah I know that I think", "It'll be right I'll do a quick review before the exam".

Students should start by making a simple list of all their subjects and ranking them from most challenging to easiest. Spend the first part of their study sessions tackling the hardest topic in their subject while the mind is fresh and focused. Even 30-45 minutes of concentrated work on a difficult subject can make a huge difference over several weeks. This is just like in tutoring sessions, spending more time in the session on the difficult topics can go a long way for improvement.

Once you have completed your harder study tasks, move on to the subjects you perform well in. These subjects are important too, but they usually require less effort to maintain your knowledge. For example ending a tutoring session with a topic they are good at and enjoy in the subject can also boost motivation and leave students feeling more positive and accomplished.

Finally, effective exam preparation is not about studying for the longest number of hours, it is about using your time wisely. Prioritise the areas that need the most improvement, review them regularly and then reinforce your strengths. This balanced approach reduces last-minute panic, builds confidence across all subjects.
