Starting Year 12 on the front foot for English

The Term 4 leading into Year 12 is a strange limbo. You begin the term still receiving Year 11 papers and feedback, the Year 12s have not entirely left yet, and you're in this weird liminal space between entering your HSC and not quite being done with Year 11. But for most students, this is where the HSC course officially begins, and the habits you build in the first few weeks, specifically for English, can be integral.

The best thing you can do right now is get ahead of your prescribed texts! Reading a novel or play for the first time in the middle of Term 1, while juggling assessments in every other subject, is stressful. Reading it now, with no pressure, means you can simply cruise through the term, rather than trying to keep up.

Once you've read a text, start a quotes bank. This does not need to be fancy. A document with three columns will work well: the quote, the technique and mini analysis (an insight about the theme or character). This will allow you to add throughout class and have a good basis to start the term.

It is also worth looking back at your Year 11 feedback. What comments kept coming up? Maybe your thesis was too broad, or your analysis drifted into retelling the plot. Pick one or two areas to focus on and work on them deliberately.

Finally, set up a simple routine. Even thirty minutes, two or three times a week, of reading, adding to your quotes bank or rewriting a paragraph adds up quickly. Consistency matters more than marathon study sessions.

Year 12 is a big year, but it does not need to be overwhelming. Starting now, while things are calm, means you can walk into Term 1 feeling prepared and confident!
