I really enjoyed being able to watch another tutor's session, it allowed me to consider other styles of teaching in a more practical way, rather than simply reading about other teaching methods. I believe it is incredibly important to continuously learn, and be open to learning, from others. There is no one perfect style to teaching, and so, there are always ways to improve our teaching styles.
Something I enjoyed about William's teaching style was the structure of his lessons. I have found that my sessions tend to be less structured -- I will come up with a loose lesson plan, but the finer details I leave up to the day and my student's needs. Observing William's session, it was obvious that every single detail of the lesson was planned. When he went through questions with his student, the questions were pre-selected and were also given marks (almost like an exam).
I really enjoyed the way that William broke down the questions into multiple marks, as I noticed it allowed his student to better understand the steps needed to find the answer to the question. This structure provided his student with a stronger guidance through the topic.
I also really enjoyed the tone and attitude that William took on when speaking to his student. Not knowing the answer to a question was not the end of the world, and the student was encouraged to leave that question and try something else. Rather than stopping the session to go through that specific question, William continued the flow of the session and ensured that his student wouldn't lose confidence. I think this is a better strategy rather than explaining the misunderstood question and then continuing. This is a strategy that I think I will begin to implement in my sessions and with my students.
