As our year 12s reach the end of their trials exam block, it has brought to my attention the importance of remaining consistent and focused in their approach to studying and preparing for their final exams. It can be difficult to ensure that the last exam receives the same care and attention as the first, especially when students have been working hard for over a week to complete multiple exams. By this stage, students may begin to feel mentally and physically exhausted, making it harder to maintain motivation and concentration.
Some strategies to prevent burnout and ensure students can perform at their best include creating a routine that is achievable and easy to repeat each day. This provides structure and stability, allowing students to plan their breaks, study times and rest. It also allows them to manage their time effectively, as they are aware of the amount of study they can realistically complete each day. Setting realistic goals can help students avoid feeling overwhelmed and provide a sense of achievement as they work though their study plan. Additionally, self care during exam time is essential to protect the mental and physical wellbeing of an individual, and prioritising this can make a huge difference in how students perform academically. By simply scheduling in time to see some sunlight and exercise, as well as maintaining a balanced diet, students are able to reduce stress levels and improve concentration. Stepping away from study allows the brain to rest and can help students return to their work feeling refreshed and ready to concentrate. Getting enough sleep is also very important, as adequate rest helps support memory, focus and overall academic performance.
By maintaining a realistic routine, taking regular breaks and staying active, students can approach their remaining exams with greater focus and confidence. It's important to remember that taking care of yourself can be just as important for achieving high results as study time, so as tutors we need to be reminding our students of this as we guide them through their exam blocks.
