Observing Charlies Economics tutoring

Today I got the wonderful to observe Charlies lesson for year 11 trials. I first noted his preparation where he printed and annotated with notes a trial paper for who his student. The student found this to be very useful as they didnt have to make as extensive notes during the lesson and they could focus and discuss the questions. I have been inspired by Charlies preparation to tailor a practise paper to the student to create a very tailored tutoring lesson which the student thoroughly enjoyed. I also noticed Charlies ability to empathise with his student who was currently in a block of tests as part of their trials. He was able to reassure and comfort the student who seemed visibly stressed. I am inspired to really take the time the build a rapport with my students and empathise with their stress during difficult periods. Another observation I noted during this tutoring lesson was how Charlie continually checked in with his student while working through questions.

This was noticeable as he did equations on the whiteboard where he continually checked in such as “is this alright” which made a multiple step question seem very manageable. This has inspired me to take more care as I explain concepts particularly in maths to continually check in with my students while working through equations so the students can follow along. I am going to copy how Charlie says “that alright” when explaining as it was a friendly way of breaking down difficult questions into smaller chunks. To conclude, shadowing Charlie’s economic lesson served as a brilliant way to engage in professional development as I learned core skills such as empathising with student during stressful periods, annotating difficult questions beforehand so the student can focus on listing to what the teacher is saying and continually checking in when writing formulas.
