Today I observed James' biology sesison with a year 12 student which we both have, working on final preparations for the HSC biology session tomorrow. Since biology is heavy content, James printed out the syllabus to go through each dot point and examples of questions specifically, and focused on revising content and practicing the syllabus points the student was least confident or familiar with. He did a run down on the eye, ear and kidney, as the syllabus requires students to know the function of these organs and how we can use different technologies to treat disorders of these organs. He mainly focused on the kidney, which I believe is the most complicated of all the organs in this dot point. The kidney is responsible for 3 functions, and broke it down into filtration, reabsorption and secretion. The blood is filtered into the bowman's capsule, the first part of the nephron through the glomerulus, which is a dense compact ball of capillaries that has blood moving at high pressure. The proximal tubule then reabsorbs certain substances we need to maintain homeostasis in our blood. We reabsorb glucose, salts, nutrients and water to maintain blood pressure and osmolality. Then, urea and other toxic substances such as drugs are actively pumped from the blood into the nephron, to be removed via the bladder.
