Due to a cancellation today i had the opportunity to observe Jake teach extension 1 mathematics. Today Polynomials was covered and from my experience both taking and teach the course this can be notoriously difficult and abstract at times.
Something that stood out to me was the depth of Jake's working out. This was fantastic to see as difficult concepts such as Polynomial division can become overwhelming very quickly so it's important to break concepts up into digestible pieces such students don't become overwhelmed. He further annotated his working out to outline further tips and tricks so that the work felt even more comfortable for the student.
Jake further slowed down the lesson to allow for plenty of questions, with difficult concepts students can often fell so overwhelmed they might be too shy to step in and ask a question so its extremely important to slow down the pace and ensure the student is on board with what is happening as opposed to just watching the tutor go through an example they don't really understand.
Overall, this lesson was a brilliant reminder that when concepts in Maths or any subject get difficult it is extremely important to slow down the pace when the student needs it, ensure they are truly following the example and allow for plenty of questions.
