Today I observed Evan tutor a student we both have for different subjects. He tutored year 12 business studies, focusing on going through past paper questions and discussing them. He ran a relaxed conversational session which helped the student feel at ease, as the stress is building with the pressure of the upcoming HSC exams. He focused on asking questions to test the students understanding of specific contexts. Evan used the cafe stimulus in question 21 as a starting point for broader discussion. When they reached part d), which asked about the implications for outsourcing a new dessert range for the business. He extended the scenario by asking what would change depending on the cafe's level of expansion, e.g. if if were a larger chain with different franchises or if it was a niche local business. Depending on this, the impacts on cost, quality control and supplier reliance would differ, which is something I personally wouldn't think about since i know nothing about business :). Evan strengthened this by explicitly referring back to which syllabus dot point this question was assessing them on, and linking this to the students personal notes where they had their personal understanding of the content written. Overall, i learnt something about business studies and grew from observing this session.
