During my observation of Oliver's HSC Chemistry tutoring session with Olivia, I noticed he created a very supportive learning environment. Oliver began by asking Olivia which areas she was finding difficult. He then started to target the areas in which she was struggling, as she needs to refine those areas with the HSC final exam coming up quite soon. So he focused on those areas and applied them to the HSC-style questions that she will face during the final exam in a couple of weeks.
Oliver first checked Olivia's existing knowledge of those areas with several short answer questions, and multi-choice questions. This allowed him to identify that she understood the areas and what areas he needs to refine and explain to her in depth, as it seemed like she was either confusing it with other concepts or content that she faced recently, or had just forgotten it over the length of the Y12 course. He explained each concept in depth after, which he regularly paused to then try to see if Olivia could finish off the content or concepts in her own words. This helped confirm whether she understood the reasoning rather than just agreeing with his explanations, which is crucial so that she can actually understand it herself without the tutor around.
As a maths tutor, I found Oliver's step by step approach quite effective, as there area few overlapping styles within the Chemistry and Maths HSC course and the final exam with the type of questions they ask, so it helps me apply his explanations and style of teaching to my own, as I can apply it to the Maths HSC course instead.
Overall, the session was well structured, and allowed Olivia to check her prior knowledge, and then applying it to the HSC paper questions which she will actually face in her exam in a couple weeks.
