This afternoon, I had the opportunity to sit it on Nastasya's session with young Carter!!
The first thing that was super obvious to me was how comfortable Carter was in Nastasya's prescence. He was super relaxed, telling her immediately about his day at school and everything fun that he got to do at Questacon earlier on in the week!! He particularly enjoyed the electricity simulation, where he got to watch lightning bolts shoot all over the room (sounds unreal, to be fair!!)
They promptly got into work soon afterwards - Nastasya swiftly checking through his spelling homework (while Carter finished telling her about the dinosaur museum). At that point, she did a really awesome job of transitioning him from story time into work mode - getting him to revise all of the words that he initially got incorrect and reattempt them with fresh eyes. He did a lot better with most of them, though understandably needed some guidance with a few of the trickier ones ("cactii" can definitely be a trip the first time around!!)
Nastasya also did a great job to not just hand Carter the answers on a silver platter - instead, guiding him incrementally and helping him piece together the answers for himself (this is so great for confidence, by the way - although providing your student the answer and getting them to reverse engineer it can be great at times, there's a different kind of kick that they get when they literally have to dig around for the answer and find the correct one for themselves!!)
Big credit to Carter also, who showed great enthusiasm and curiousity throughout the duration of the session (we all know how easy it can be to get lazy during the last week of term!!) If he wasn't sure about a word, he felt no shame in asking for a definition from Nastasya, or for her to give it to him in a sentence.
