Kaelyn spent this session working with her Year 7 Mathematics student on Algebra. The main focus was getting comfortable with algebraic terminology and understanding how to collect like terms.
At the start of the session, Kaelyn went over some of the basic words used in algebra so the student knew what they were looking at when working through questions. They then moved into collecting like terms, with the student practicing how to identify which terms could be combined and which needed to stay separate.
Kaelyn worked through a few examples with the student before giving them questions to try on their own. When the student got stuck, she talked through the question with them and helped them work out where they had gone wrong rather than just giving them the answer.
The student was engaged throughout the lesson and became more confident as they worked through more questions. They were able to recognise like terms more easily towards the end of the session and showed a better understanding of how to simplify algebraic expressions.
Kaelyn kept the lesson relaxed and encouraging, which made it easier for the student to have a go at questions even when they weren't completely sure. Overall, it was a good session that helped the student build a stronger foundation in Algebra and become more comfortable with the terminology and basic skills.
