Today, during my last minute cancellation, I decided to observe Pamela tutoring Mia, a Year 3 Maths and English student. This was an interesting session to observe since Pamela was a cover tutor, and had not worked with Mia before.
They started with English where Pamela helped Mia understand the difference between adverbs, nouns, verbs and adjectives. Pamela started with first describing and defining the difference between each and they then came up with examples together on the board, which allowed Mia to actively contribute to the session rather than just being given the answer. Mia then completed a worksheet independently to apply what she learnt, and helped Pamela identify what Mia needs further support and help in.
When a student has a different tutor, they can sometimes be a bit scared and hesitant to ask questions when they are unsure or confused. Something that Pamela did really well, was consistently asking Mia questions throughout the session and while she was completing the worksheet. This allowed Pamela to check Mia's understanding and make Mia more confident and comfortable asking for help when she needs it. I thought this was very effective and very useful to build rapport being tutor and student especially in their first session together.
Around halfway through the hour, Pamela shifted towards Maths they focused on understanding digit and place value, particularly tens and ones. Pamela worked through examples such as understanding that 5 tens and 2 ones make 52, before making Mia complete similar questions herself. I liked how Pamela used to board to help with breaking down the question into smaller steps and how she used different colours to identify the place values and digits.
Overall, Pamela did a really good job tutoring Mia, and was able to build good rapport despite it being their first session together. Well done Pamela!!
