During my observation session, I had the opportunity to observe Jake tutoring Vani in Mathematics Extension 1. The session provided valuable insight into the importance of clear mathematical explanations, structured problem solving and effective questioning when teaching advanced mathematical concepts.
Throughout the lesson, Jake demonstrated a supportive and engaging teaching approach, encouraging Vani to think critically rather than simply memorise mathematical procedures. A particularly valuable aspect of his tutoring style was his emphasis on developing a logical approach to challneging questions. This is especially important in Extension Mathematics 1, where students must apply their conceptual understanding to unfamiliar and multistep problems.
Jake's approach highlighted the importance of breaking down complex mathematical concepts into manageable steps while maintaining the level of challenge expected in an advanced mathematical course. Rather than focusing solely on obtaining the right answer, the approach encouged Vani to undertand the reasoning behind each mathematical process and recognise connections between concepts.
Another takeaway was the value of questioning as a teachin strategy. Prompting Vani to explain her reasoning, justify her chosen method and consider alternative approaches can help tutors identify gaps in knowledge, while promoting independent problem-solving skills. This is particularly beneficial when preparing students for exam-styled questions that require both accuracy and mathematical fluency.
Reflecting on this observation, I gained a greater appreciation for the balance between providing sufficient guidance and allowing students the opportunity to work through challenges independently. Overall, the observation reinforced the importance of fostering mathematical confidence alongside conceptual understanding to support students in achieving their academic potential.
