I had the opportunity to observe Natasya introduce the year 12 Common Module. The lesson had a strong focus on helping the student understand the ideas behind the module rather than simply memorising content for an essay.
Natasya often built on the student’s responses through follow up questions, which made the lesson feel more like a discussion than a lecture. When the student gave a fairly simple interpretation, she would prompt them to explain why a character behaved in a certain way or what this revealed about human experiences. This helped the student develop their ideas in more depth without Natasya immediately giving them the answer.
As they worked through the text, Natasya naturally connected the discussion back to essay writing. Rather than treating techniques as something to identify on their own, she encouraged the student to think about what the technique actually contributed to the meaning of the text. She also showed the student how some of their verbal responses could be reshaped into stronger analytical sentences, which seemed to help bridge the gap between understanding the text and expressing that understanding in an HSC response.
I also noticed that Natasya adjusted her explanations depending on how confident the student seemed with the material. If an idea was not immediately understood, she approached it in a different way or gave a simpler example before returning to the original point. This kept the lesson moving while still making sure the student was following.
Overall, the lesson showed me the value of using questioning and discussion to draw ideas out of a student rather than explaining everything for them. Natasya was able to keep the lesson focused on the Common Module while still allowing the conversation to develop naturally, and the student became noticeably more confident in explaining their ideas as the lesson progressed.
