Observing Demi working with her Year 4 mathematics student gave me a better understanding of how to support a younger student's learning. Throughout the session, Demi demonstrated patience, adapted her teaching to suit the student's needs and used effective strategies to keep her focused and on task. One thing I noticed was how patient Demi was with her student. When the student struggles with a question, Demi did not rush her or immediately give he the answer. Instead, she allowed the student time to think and try solve the problem herself. When needed, she explained the question again in a different way. This helped the student feel supported and encouraged her to keep trying, even when the work became challenging.
Demi also adapted her teaching style to suit the student's age and understanding. When the student found the multiplication concepts difficult, she broke the question into smaller steps, making it easier to follow. She adjusted her explanations depending on how well the student understood the content and brought her back to the basics. She adjusted her explanations depending on how well the student understood the content. I notices that this approach helped prevent the student from feeling overwhelmed and allowed her to build confidence in her mathematical abilities. Another strength was Demi's ability to keep the student focused. As young students can sometimes become distracted, Demi used gentle reminders to bring her attention back to the task. She maintained a friendly and encouraging attitude while ensuring the student continues working through the questions. This created a balance between keeping the session productive and making learning enjoyable.
Overall, observing Demi's session taught me that effective tutoring involves more than explaining academic content. Being patient, understanding a student's needs and adapting teaching methods are all important skills. I learnt that creating a supportive and structured learning environment can help students stay engaged, develop confidence and become more independent learners.
