Observation

Observing Evanthea teach a Year 8 student about percentages and rates was an interesting and valuable learning experience. It gave me the oppurtunity to see how a tutor explains mathematical concepts, supports a student's learning and adapts their teaching to suit the student's needs. During the session, Evanthea focused on helping the student understand percentages and rates. She explained the concepts step by step, making sure the student had a clear understanding before moving on to more challenging questions. When discussing percentages, she demonstrated how to calculate percentages of amounts and explained how percentages relate to both fractions and decimals. She also worked through examples to show the student how these skills can be appplied to everyday situations, such as discounts and money. When teaching rates, she helped the student understand how two different quatities can be compared, including involving speed, time and distance. She used mathematical examples to demonstrate how to solve problems and encoruaged the student to work through questions independently. One thing I noticed was Evanthea's patience and the way she communicated with the student. Rather than simply giving the student the asnwers, she guided them through the steps and encouraged them to think critically about the problems.

When the student found something difficualt she took the time to explain it again in a different way. This demonstrated the importance of being flexible and recognising that every student learns differently. From obersing this session, I learned that effective tutoring invloves more than just knowing the content. It also requires clear communication, patience, encouragement and the ability to identify areas where a student may need additional support. Creating a supportive learning environment can help students feel more comfortable asking questions and making mistakes as they learn. Overall, observing Evanthea was a positive experience that heolped me better understand the role of agood tutor. It showed me how breaking down complaex math concepts into smaller steps can improve a students understanding.
