Learning in an Australian high school can be a mixed experience. Some days are interesting and enjoyable, while others are dreaded. High school is often more about academic achievement though, it is where students learn to manage their time, work with others and become more independent.
A benefit of Australian schools is the range of subjects which students can study. Whilst there are generic subjects such as English, mathematics and science, there are other options such as economics, legal studies, music and art. As students progress through the years, more choice is afforded to them, allowing them to focus more on their passions and interests.
Furthermore, technology is becoming a huge component of learning. Students use laptops and more digital resources, allowing students to access more practice material as well as research and communicate with teachers more efficiently. However, the usage of technology is often what holds students back, as it creates a huge distraction for students. It can also often worsen a students procrastination, leading them to do more last-minute, ineffective study. It is up to the modern education system to ensure that students can learn to manage the distraction caused by technology.
HSC is often the most stressful part of a student's career due to the increase in pressure and difficulty of the content. One of the most useful things a student can do to maintain calm during difficult exam periods is to stay consistent and do a little bit of work everyday. However, the outcome of high schools such as HSC results and ATAR is not only what high school is about.
Sport, clubs, music and school events are the biggest parts of the high school experience. With so many opportunities for leading, organising and performing, I encourage all students to participate in anything that captures their interest. It is one of my regrets from high school that I did not participate as much as I could have.
