Due to a late cancellation today I decided to observe Daniella tutor her student in year 3 Maths.
During the observation session, I watched Daniella tutor a year 3 student in maths, with a particular focus on mass and capacity. The session was structured around helping the student develop an understanding of measurement concepts and apply them to practical examples. Daniella began by checking the student's existing knowledge and asking questions about familiar units such as kilograms and grams. She encouraged her student to explain their thinking rather than simply providing the correct answer.
Daniella used clear, age-appropriate language throughout the session. When discussing mass, she used everyday examples to help the student understand the difference between heavier and lighter objects and when different units of measurement are appropriate. The student was encouraged to compare objects and estimate their mass before considering the actual measurement. Daniella responded positively to the student's answers and provided prompts when the student was unsure.
The session also covered capacity, including concepts such as litres and millilitres. Daniella related these measurements to familiar containers and liquids, which appeared to make the concepts easier for the student to understand. She asked questions such as which container would hold more and encouraged the student to justify their answers. When the student made an error, Daniella calmly explained the concept again and used another example rather than immediately giving the answer.
I noticed that Daniella maintained a supportive and encouraging approach throughout the lesson. She allowed the student sufficient time to think and adjusted her explanations when the student appeared confused. Her questioning helped the student remain actively involved rather than passively listening.
Overall, the session demonstrated effective tutoring, particularly through questions, encouragement, practical examples, and checking the student's understanding. Daniella created a positive learning environment and supported the student in developing confidence with mass and capacity.
