Importance of Calculus to our modern world

Learning calculus is essential as it provides the mathematical framework for understanding change, motion, and accumulation. Developed by Newton and Leibniz in the 17th century, calculus equips students with tools to analyse rates of change through derivatives and to measure accumulated quantities through integration. These concepts give us the ability to model and predict complex systems, making calculus a cornerstone of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and beyond.

In physics, calculus underpins nearly every major theory. Derivatives describe velocity and acceleration from position (also known as displacement) data. While integrals calculate work, energy and the trajectories of moving particles including planets and atomic particles such as electrons.

All types of engineers use calculus.
Civil engineers use differential equations to design stable bridges and buildings that withstand dynamic forces.
Aerospace engineers use calculus to optimise rocket trajectories and fuel efficiency.
Electrical engineers model circuit and signal processing, using differential equations and other electromagnetic equations that involve integrals.
Without calculus, modern infrastructure, transportation, and technology would be
impossible.

Beyond the physical sciences and engineering, calculus drives advancements in economics, biology and medicine. Economists apply derivatives to determine marginal costs and revenues, enabling optimal pricing and resource allocation.
In biology, differential equations model population growth, the spread of diseases, and the flow of blood and other nutrients. Medical professionals use calculus in imaging technologies like MRI and CT scans, as well as calculating precise drug dosages that vary over time.
Even in everyday life, calculus is needed to calculate weather forecasting models, financial market predictions, and the algorithms behind GPS navigation.

By learning calculus, students can gain a technical competence in solving math and physics problems, but also a deeper appreciation for how continuous change governs reality. Mastering calculus opens doors to innovation and decision making, allowing individuals to contribute to the scientific method and technological solutions that improve society.

Our modern world would be a completely different place without the technologies and algorithms that were created with calculus.
