HSC Maths practice

HSC Mathematics (whether it is Standard, Advanced, or Ext 1 & 2) can feel like a mountain of endless formulas and tricky problems. But walking into that exam room feeling confident isn’t about being a genius; it’s about how you practice.

HSC markers generally write questions that look completely different from your textbook. If you just memorise formulas and "steps", you'll get stuck. Instead, focus on why a formula works. When you understand the underlying concepts of calculus or financial maths, you can apply them to any weirdly worded question NESA throws at you.

Don't wait until October to look at the NESA reference sheet. Use it during every single study session. You need to know exactly what is on it, where it is located, and, more importantly, what isn't on it so you can memorise the gaps.

Doing 50 past paper questions is useless if you make the same mistake 50 times. Keep an "Error Log" in a dedicated notebook. Write down the questions you got wrong. Redo them in a different coloured pen. Write a sticky note to your future self explaining the trap you fell into. I would recommend writing one "hint", that will help remind you how to complete similar questions in the future,

As the trials and finals approach, simulate the real deal. Sit in a quiet room, set a timer, and do a past paper without looking at your notes. This builds your exam stamina and teaches you crucial time management.

Remember, consistent, focused practice on your weak points and understanding your mistakes will always beat mindless revision.
