How to Prepare for Prelims

Preparing for your Year 11 preliminary exams is not just about surviving the next few week, it is a practice run of the HSC. These exams test your content mastery and refine the study habits you will rely on next year. Here is how to structure your preparation for peak performance:

Know the Syllabus Inside Out:
The NESA syllabus is your ultimate cheat sheet. Download the syllabus documents for every subject and convert the dot points into a checklist. As you study, rate your understanding of each point using a traffic light system:
- Green: Fully undersood and memorised
- Yellow: Needs review or practice questions
- Red: Major gap requiring immediate help from teachers or peers.

Ditch Passive Reading for Active Recall:
Reading over highlighted notes creates an illysion of compeence. Real retention happens when you force your brain to retrieve information. Swap passive re-reading for:
- Flashcards: Ideal for definitions, formulas, and key dates
- Practice papers: Complete past preliminary papers under timed conditions to adapt to exam pressure.
- Teaching: Explain complex concepts out loud to a friend or family member without looking at your notes.

Build a Realistic Study Schedule:
Avoid marathon cramming sessions that lead to burnout. Block out specific study slots using 45-minute focus intervals followed by 15-minute breaks. Prioritise your hardest subjects early in the day when your brain is the sharpest.

Refine Your Exam Techniques:
Knowing the content is only half the battle. Addressing the verb in the exam question (e.g. evaluate, analyse, contrast) is what unlocks top marks. Ensure you practice writing complete, structured essays and short-answer responses that directly address NESA key verbs.

Stay consistent, look after yourself and your sleep schedule and treat these exams as a valuable learning opportunity before Year 12 begins. Remember, this is not the HSC yet, goodluck!
