How to Make Homework Less of a Battle

Homework can quickly become one of the most frustrating parts of the school day. After spending hours at school, students may be tired, distracted or simply ready to relax. For parents, this can turn homework time into repeated reminders, arguments and stress. The good news is that homework does not always have to be a battle.
Create a constant routine.
One of the easiest ways to make homework more manageable is to create a predictable routine. Try choosing a regular time and place for homework each day. This helps students know what to expect and reduces daily negotiation about when homework should begin. The right timing will be different for every student. Some children work best after a short break and a snack, while others prefer to get homework finished as soon as they get home.
Break it into smaller tasks
A large amount of homework can feel overwhelming. Instead of looking at everything at once, encourage your child to break their work into smaller, achievable tasks. For example, completing five math questions before taking a short break can feel much more manageable than thinking about an entire worksheet. Small goals also give a sense of progress which makes it easier to stay motivated.
Give students some control
Children are more likely to engage in there work when they feel they have some choice. Where possible, let them decide what subject to start with, where they would like to work or when to take a short break. Giving students responsibility for small decisions can help them develop independence and organisational skills.
Focus on effort, not just results
Homework is an opportunity to practice and learn, so mistakes are a normal part of the process. Instead of focusing only on whether every answer is correct, recognise effort, persistence and improvement. Encouraging your child to keep trying can help build confidence when encountering something difficult.
