How to Create a Positive Study Environment

Creating a positive study environment at home can make a massive difference to motivation, effectiveness and success of studying at home. It can make it much easier to stay focused, organised and motivated in a place that can be very distracting.

1- Have a dedicated study space
Having a specific spot that is dedicated to study and focus helps students associate that area with learning and concentration. This could be a specific desk, spot at the dining table or chair that is dedicated to studying. This area should have minimal noise and distractions (no TV nearby), enough desk space for computer or books and have decent lighting so that you can see what is needed.
Using the same space regularly can help establish a habit and routine so that your brain automatically knows to be focused when in that area.

2- Minimise distractions
Studying at home can be full of distractions, the TV, phones, siblings or household discussions can easily interrupt concentration and the flow of study. To minimise the impact of this, some tips are: put your phone on do not disturb or away from your study area, use noise cancelling headphones and ensure you are away from busy areas. You can also tell your family when you are planning to study so that they can be considerate during this time.

3- Create a routine
Having a steady routine ensures that studying becomes a habit, rather than something that you have to force yourself to do each afternoon. This can be difficult to begin with, but over time it will become second nature. To help with this, you can set aside certain times that are dedicated to studying. This could be a two hour block in the afternoon before dinner, or split this up into smaller blocks to keep focused. Creating goals for each part of study helps you to stay productive and motivated to keep going!
Doing the same thing over and over will make this easier and more achievable.

Overall, creating a positive environment is about making studying slightly more enjoyable, productive and something that is part of a routine.
