The NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) is the main credential awarded to students who complete their senior secondary schooling in New South Wales. It is more than a collection of final exams: students build their HSC results through a combination of school-based assessment and examinations, with their results contributing to an overall Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for eligible students.
To qualify for the HSC, students generally need to complete the required pattern of courses and meet the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requirements. Most students study Year 11 courses before progressing to HSC courses in Year 12. They must also complete the HSC minimum standard in reading, writing and numeracy.
HSC marks are generally based on two components. The first is the school-based assessment mark, which reflects a student's performance in assessment tasks during the HSC year. The second is the HSC examination mark, which comes from the external examination conducted by NESA. These components are combined to produce the student's HSC mark for each course.
For many courses, the HSC examination contributes 50 per cent of the final HSC mark. School-based assessment contributes the other 50 per cent. NESA moderates school assessment marks so that results from different schools can be compared fairly. This means a student's assessment rank within their school can matter, particularly because the examination results help determine how assessment marks are aligned.
The HSC and ATAR are related but are not the same thing. The HSC records achievement in individual courses, while the ATAR is a rank used primarily for university admission. The Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) calculates the ATAR using eligible HSC course results. It considers a student's best combination of units according to its rules, rather than simply adding every mark together.
The system can therefore seem complicated at first, but its basic structure is straightforward: choose an appropriate pattern of courses, complete school assessments, sit the relevant HSC examinations, receive course results, and, if eligible, receive an ATAR.
