It may not be the most enjoyable thing in the world to sit down for many hours at home or in the library and poring over practice test after practice test. And while for some subjects - sciences, maths, multiple choice questions - it is quite easy to tell if you are improving, subjects whose HSC exam lack a "subjective" answer section are particularly tricky to self assess.
There are a few good tricks though!
A) write out your responses and only mark your work two days later, once you have completely forgotten what the paper was even about and you can approach your responses as a marker does.
B) ask a friend to mark your work! If you and your friend both sit papers and swap them, you'll easily be able to fill in gaps that each other missed and be a lot more impartial with your marking, emulating an HSC marker better! This method also allows for you to give each other ample feedback and rework your responses until you're satisfied with them!
C) If you're completely stuck on how to improve your responses, check out the marking guidelines on the NESA website! This was an absolute lifesaver for me, especially for modern history, as NESA uploads scaffolds of sample responses. When you're checking your work, you can mark it with the exact same guideines as a NESA marker and ensure that you are hitting the right dotpoints!
D) However, if the content that you are inserting into your responses is correct but the way in which you phrase your responses is falling short, you can also search up "HSC Standards Materials" which has actual student papers with the band that they received for their response. You can use these sample papers and compare them with your own work so that you'll have a better of what mark range your response fits into.
