Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly common part of students lives including the way they learn and complete schoolwork. When used responsibly AI can be a valuable learning tool. However students need to understand the AI should support their learning not replace their own thinking effort and creativity..
One of the most useful way students can use AI as a study assistant. For example student students can ask AI to explain a difficult concept in simpler language provide additional practice questions or give them examples to help clarify an idea. This can be particularly helpful when a student is unsure where to begin or wants to practice a skill independently.
I can also help students improve their work without doing it for them. Rather than asking AI to write in an entire assignment students should use it to clarify areas that could be clearer suggest ways to improve their structure or explain why particular answer may be incorrect. This encourages students to think critically and make their own decision about how to improve.
However, one of the biggest risks of using AI is becoming overly dependent on it. AI can sometimes provide incorrect misleading or outdated information meaning student should not automatically assume that every response is accurate.. checking information against reliable sources and discussing uncertainties with the teacher are important parts of responsible AI use.
Students should also consider academic honesty. Submitting AI generated work as their own does not demonstrate their understanding and may breach school assessment rules. The purpose of education is not simply to produce a finished answer. It is to develop knowledge, problem-solving skills and independent thinking.
