When Rachel began her lesson with Olivia, circles were a mystery. While Olivia showed confidence in being able to find areas of shapes of rectangles and other simple shapes, the moment pi appeared she wasn't sure what to do. So Rachel began to teach Olivia, not only pi but the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle giving Olivia example questions to show the radius' effect on the area and circumference.
After this Rachel moved on to other complex shapes such as trapeziums, not just showing area and perimeter but also explaining how to solve algebraic problems where a perimeter is given and it is required to find the length of a specific sidelength, throughout all this keeping Olivia engaged, answering with wit and a clear understanding of what was going on. Rachel gave Olivia key strategies like identifying parallel lines.
Once Olivia showed a clear understanding of the given content so far, Rachel went even further explaining to Olivia how to find the area of a sector by fidning the ratio of an angle over the full rotation of a circle, expalining it flawlessly while also keeping Olivia engaged asking her questions to challenge her thinking and get her thought process.
As Olivia began to show a clear confidence in the area of a sector Rachel knew it was time to move on to something much harder, circumference of a sector. Rachel began by explaining the same ratio (theta/360) that existed for area exists for the circumference before addressing the biggest misconception Olivia had, you also had to add the radius twice for the circumference. Once Rachel pointed this out clearly and confidently Olivia showed a clear understanding and was able to complete the rest of given questions showing a clear progression of learning throughout the session.
