One of the most valuable study techniques high school students can develop is active recall. Many students spend hours rereading their notes, highlighting textbooks, or watching explanations believing that this is enough to prepare for assessments. However, being familiar with information does not necessarily mean they can remember or apply it independently.
Active recall involves encouraging students to retrieve information from memory rather than simply reviewing it. During tutoring sessions this can be incorporated by asking students questions about previously covered content before allowing them to refer to their notes. This helps to identify what they genuinely understand and which areas require further revision.
One effective strategy is beginning each session with a short quiz based on topics covered in previous lessons. This encourages students to regularly revisit information rather than only studying it immediately before an exam. It also gives tutors an opportunity to identify gaps in understanding and adjust the lesson accordingly.
Another useful approach is asking students to explain a concept without looking at their notes. For example, a biology student might explain a physiological process, while a history student could record key events and their significance. Explaining information in their own words encourages deeper understanding and highlights areas where their knowledge may be incomplete.
It is also important to remind students that struggling to remember something is not necessarily a negative experience. Attempting to retrieve information strengthens learning, particularly when students receive feedback and revisit the correct answer afterwards.
As tutors, we should encourage students to incorporate active recall into their independent study routines through flashcards practice questions and regular self testing.
