More often than not, when students are asked what they need to do in order to improve their grades, the answer is some variation of "I just need to get motivated". And fair enough. It's a lot easier to sit down and study when you're feeling productive, have a goal in mind, and genuinely want to get something done. The issue with this, however, is that motivation comes and goes. One day you could be ready to spend three hours catching up on schoolwork, and the next, even opening your laptop feels like a chore. So what happens when that motivation runs out? Do we just stop studying until it comes back?
This is where discipline becomes important. Unlike motivation, discipline is about doing something regardless of whether you want to or not. A student who studies for 20 minutes every afternoon, even when they'd rather be doing literally anything else, is likely to make more consistent progress than someone who waits around for that sudden burst of inspiration. And really, how often does that burst come when you actually need it?
Of course, telling someone to "just be disciplined" is easier said than done. If you're used to procrastinating and leaving assignments until the night before they're due, suddenly expecting yourself to study for hours every day just isn't realistic. It's better to start small. Set aside just fifteen minutes after school, put your phone on Do Not Disturb, and actually do the work. Once that becomes normal, you can increase it. Eventually, studying stops feeling like a big decision you have to make every afternoon.
Motivation can still be useful. It can get you excited about a goal and encourage you to start. In fact, you'll find that after you build discipline, you still get random waves of motivation that you can once again utilise. But discipline is the consistent backbone of good habits every student should work on developing. At the end of the day, students won't always feel motivated, and that's only natural. What actually makes the difference is whether they keep going anyway.
